Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Cut sweet potato into 1/2-inch wide fries. Place in a bowl with canola oil; toss to coat. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika; mix until all fries are evenly coated.

Why are my sweet potato fries not crispy in air fryer? ›

For best results, don't overcrowd them or your fries will not get crispy. The amount of fries per batch will vary depending on the size of your air fryer. Cook for 15-18 minutes or until fries are cooked through, crispy, and golden brown, giving the air fryer basket a little shake halfway through cook time.

Why won t my sweet potato fries get crispy? ›

The secret to crispy (instead of soggy) sweet potato fries is to spread them out in an even layer with enough room so that they don't touch. This is especially important if you're making a big batch of fries. Instead of just piling more onto one baking pan, spread them out over two baking pans or cook them in batches.

Why do my sweet potato fries turn black in air fryer? ›

If you cut your sweet potato fries in uneven sizes (i.e., some much thinner than others), the smaller fries may start to burn while the thicker fries are still cooking. If all of the fries are burning, the temperature of your air fryer is too high or the fries have been cooking for too long.

Why are my sweet potato fries burning in air fryer? ›

This can be caused by either overcrowding the air fryer basket or adding too much oil to the fries. I recommend cooking the sweet potato fries in a single layer at the bottom of the basket to allow the air to properly circulate and cook the fries. I also recommend not adding more than 1 teaspoon of oil to the fries.

How do you know when fries are done in air fryer? ›

Air fry them at 380 for 12 to 15 minutes, flipping halfway. Take them out when they're crisp and brown around the edges. Repeat with the remaining potatoes, cooking as many batches as necessary to give the fries adequate space in the basket.

What makes sweet potato fries better? ›

Sweet potato fries are slightly higher in calories and carbs but also more nutrient dense than French fries. The greatest nutrient difference is that French fries have no vitamin A, while sweet potato fries are high in this nutrient. Vitamin A is important for your vision and immune system ( 2 ).

Why are things not getting crispy in air fryer? ›

Dry the outside of the food properly before you add oil. Do not use too much oil, as this will make the food less crispy and more fattening. Meat or poultry can be lightly brushed with oil or marinated to get the crispiest results.

Why are my frozen sweet potato fries soggy in the air fryer? ›

There are two things that can combat soggy sweet potato fries in the air fryer. First, remove as much moisture from the surface of the potatoes as possible. A quick pat all over the cut potatoes with a paper towel can help with that. Secondly, leave adequate space between each of the fries while air frying.

Why do you soak sweet potatoes before baking? ›

What about soaking? Some recipes for homemade sweet potato fries ask you to soak the fries before cooking. The theory is that soaking draws out starch from inside the potatoes, helping them crisp up.

How do restaurants get their fries so crispy? ›

Blanching. Another restaurant trick is to blanch the fries in water, then freeze them, which allows more of the potato's moisture to escape, thus producing a crispier fry.

Why soak sweet potatoes before air frying? ›

If you'd like, you can soak the sweet potato slices for 30 minutes up to 2 hours before frying to remove excess starch. Personally, though, going through this step didn't make a real difference for my fries. Peels on or off — it's up to you!

Are air fried sweet potato fries bad for you? ›

Air-fried sweet potato fries are crispy, tender and delicately sweet. They're also made with less fat than traditional fries, so they're a healthier option when you're craving crunchy spuds. If the cinnamon-pepper spice is too intense, try thyme, oregano, paprika or garlic instead.

What happens if you don t soak potatoes before air frying? ›

I wouldn't bother doing potatoes from the raw state, without soaking. It will take about a half an hour and the texture won't be nearly as rewarding. They just don't get very crispy without that cold soak.

How much heat and time should you put a sweet potato in an air fryer? ›

Sweet potatoes take 40 to 50 minutes to bake in the air fryer at 370 degrees F, compared to 50 to 65 minutes (or longer) in the oven (check out How to Bake a Sweet Potato). Use that time to whip up a fast, easy main like Pan Fried Chicken Breast.

What temperature do you heat fries in an air fryer? ›

Simply set your air fryer to 350 degrees, then place your leftover fries in a single layer in the fryer basket. Heat them for three to five minutes or until they reach your desired crispiness. Just like with the oven method, make sure you don't crowd the air fryer basket so the fries get nice and crispy.

What temperature do you air fry at? ›

Step 4: Be mindful of air frying times and temperatures

Generally, you can expect to air fry in a convection oven at temperatures between 350–400°F, but it will vary from recipe to recipe.

What temp is good for sweet potatoes? ›

A good rule of thumb for whole baked sweet potatoes: 45 minutes to 1 hour at 400 degrees F; 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes at 350 degrees F; 1 and 1/2 hours at 325 degrees F. You'll know the sweet potatoes are done by piercing the center of the sweet potato with the tip of a sharp knife; the flesh should yield easily.
