TheJeep Cherokeedebuted in 1974 as a two-door version of theJeep Wagoneer. With less weight than the 4x4 on which it was based and featuring a large rear storage area, the first-generation Jeep Cherokee was both sporty and practical. The Jeep Cherokee's 1974 sales brochure is the first time that the term "sports utility vehicle" was used to describe a vehicle. A four-door version of the Jeep Cherokee was launched in 1977, and a stronger but lighter unibody construction was introduced with the second generation in 1984.
Jeep Cherokee evolution
The Jeep Cherokee was named theJeep Libertyin North America for its third and fourth generations to differentiate it from theJeep Grand Cherokee, while staying on sale under its previous name elsewhere. Generations three and four saw the Jeep Cherokee receive new four-cylinder and V6 engines, updated transmissions and a return to squared-off styling for the fourth generation. The fifth-generation Jeep Cherokee was launched in 2014 with its original name restored and a new design that positioned it as a mid-size crossover. Thanks to better aerodynamics and more efficient engines, the fifth-generation Jeep Cherokee is up to 45% more fuel efficient than the Jeep Liberty it replaced.
